Geologist
Based in Calgary, reporting to Supervisor/Team Leader, the individual will work in a small multi-disciplinary project team, including engineers, and other geoscientists to provide detailed and comprehensive geology evaluation for the development of the TriStar Thermal SAGD Project.
Primary responsibilities:
- Perform detailed geological study and interpretation based on log, core analysis data.
- Conduct formation correlation and generate isopach maps, structure maps as well as cross sections.
- Build and maintain 3D geological model through the integration of all available data for reservoir simulation.
- Generate geological prognosis for the drilling program through geological data analysis, interpretation and mapping.
- Work closely with other upstream cross-functional team members in implementation and operation of the pilot project as well as the application of the future commercial project.
Basic Qualifications:
- Minimum degree: Bachelor of Science in Geology
- A good standing with or eligible for registration of APEGGA
- Minimum 5 years of industrial experience
- Excellent communication skills in both verbal and written
- Good understanding of oil sands exploration and development
- Strong computer skills and familiarity with geology and office business software
- Excellent mapping skills
Required Qualifications
- Hand-on 3D modeling experience
- Previous SAGD experience on the pilot or commercial project.
- 5+ years of experience with Calgary-based oil/gas producers

Senior Mechanical Engineer-General
The Senior Mechanical Engineer will be the client representative accountable for mechanical engineering throughout the design, commissioning and operation of VCI’s TriStar Projects in accordance with the objectives of company business plan.
Primary Role
Pre- Start-Up
- Develop technical expertise in all aspects of mechanical design, operation and maintenance
- Participate and support of detailed engineering in design reviews, including the support of unit HAZOP and SIL assessments
- Provide discipline review of operating and maintenance procedures
- Analyze and resolve problems and opportunities encountered during module fabrication and site construction
- Ensure all technical aspects of mechanical design are understood to meet the commissioning and start-up schedule
- Provide mechanical support during commissioning and start-up
- Work with Maintenance and Operations in the development of equipment care plans
Post Start-Up
- Work with technical and operation teams to develop engineering solutions to mechanical problems to ensure the Business Plan targets are met
- Ensure that results of integrity assessments are stewarded and that appropriate risk mitigation plans are developed in order to maintain Business Plan targets
- Participate in failure investigation and root cause analyses
- Develop and implement mechanical equipment redesign, alterations and rebuilds for smaller scopes of work
- Document opportunities for mechanical design improvement for future projects
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering
- Registration as a Professional Engineer in Alberta (APEGGA)
- 8+ years of applicable mechanical experience in oil and gas facilities with demonstrated success in an operation environment and/or engineering environment
- Experience and expertise with SAGD facilities design, construction and operation is preferred, experience in refinery/upgrader is a plus
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a proven high level of customer focus, energy, positive attitude, organization and clear ownership of technical issues
- Grass roots plant start-up experience is desirable

Senior Mechanical Engineer—Rotary Kiln Design
We are currently looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer specializing on the mechanical design of a rotary kiln and associated facilities for a proprietary bitumen / heavy oil upgrading process. The roles and responsibilities include:
- Provide mechanical engineering input to the project, especially at early stages, to determine the optimum project design and execution plan
- Work closely with EPC contractors, develop and improve designs of rotary kilns and associated process / equipment.
- Evaluate mechanical engineering, design and technical criteria regarding safety, application, schedule, costs and project milestones
- Assist Operations in running the facility safely and efficiently
- Participate in the operation of a pilot scale plant
Basic Qualifications:
- Minimum B.Sc degree in Mechanical Engineering
- 8+ years of industrial experience
- A registered member or (eligible for registration) of APEGGA
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience in design, operation and maintenance of rotary kilns. Experience in cement kiln design / operation is highly desirable
- Experience or knowledge in structural / thermal FEA analysis
- Familiarity with petroleum refining or petrochemical facilities
- A self starter

Head, Regulatory Affairs and Health, Safety and Environment
Based in Calgary and reporting to the Vice President, you will be responsible for directing and managing all regulatory, health, safety and environmental (HSE) compliance requirements for the company. This will include the submission of all regulatory applications and obtaining the required approvals for oil sands and upgrading projects and exploration and drilling programs. The preferred candidate will have ten years of regulatory and HSE experience in the petroleum industry, at least three in the oil sand sector, and a proven successful track record in regulatory approvals, licensing and permitting.
Responsibilities
- Lead the preparation and submission of all oil sands and upgrading regulatory applications, amendments, licensing and permitting
- Obtain the regulatory approvals, licenses and permits
- Ensure full compliance of all oil sand, upgrading, exploration and drilling regulations, approvals, licenses and permits
- Manage and direct all regulatory, health, safety and environment matters internally and externally with other industry members, local or regional authorities, and government departments and regulators provincially and federally
- Ensure the design, construction and operations of oil sands projects are in full compliance of regulations, approvals, licenses and permits
- Develop and implement regulatory, safety and environmental programs
- Manage and submit the regulatory and approval reports to government departments and regulators with assistance from other staff
- Develop and implement regulatory approval plans for oil sands projects
- Contract and co-ordinate the work of environmental and safety consultants
- Ensure all government regulatory and HSE requirements are being adhered to by the company and its contractors
- Lead the company’s efforts for continuous improvement in regulatory and HSE compliance and associated targets
Requirements:
- 10 years or more experience in regulatory affairs and health, safety and environment matters in the Canadian petroleum industry and at least 3 years experience in Alberta oil sands
- Comprehensive knowledge of oil sands regulations and regulatory processes
- University degree in business, science or engineering
- Leadership qualities to meet and exceed regulatory and HSE targets
- Excellent writing, reading, researching and networking skills
- Interpersonal abilities to effectively work with others
